Combustion engines are on the way out; electric vehicles (EVs) are the future.

With the government banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, making the switch to electric power has never been more appealing.

There were 17,294 battery electric vehicles registered in January 2023 – an increase of almost 20% on the same month last year. It’s clear that more and more people are starting to move away from petrol and diesel.

If you want to make a futureproofed decision when it comes to choosing your next car, DS have some great options that could be worth considering.

DS 4 E-TENSE

The cost of alternatives to petrol and diesel doesn’t have to be prohibitive. Now that many models have been on the market for a longer time, it’s easier to find used DS cars that are hybrid or electric – making it easier on your bank balance.

The DS 4 E-TENSE is a hatchback that delivers great fuel economy and plenty of power with a 225hp plug-in hybrid engine.

It’s claimed to be capable of achieving 232.3mpg and is therefore permitted in Ultra Low Emissions Zones – perfect if one has been introduced near where you live.

DS 9 E-TENSE

For a luxurious, elegant saloon, take a look at the DS 9 E-TENSE. The two-wheel drive option delivers an impressive 250hp, but for more power you can select the four-wheel drive model and increase that significantly to 360hp.

It comes equipped with a great array of tech including active scan suspension, drive assist and park pilot, while the leather interior that covers the entire dashboard adds to the premium feel.

DS 7 E-TENSE

SUVs have seen a surge in popularity in recent years and the DS 7 E-TENSE will not disappoint. A state-of-the-art digital infotainment system that includes a 12-inch HD central screen and a personal assistant with voice recognition makes the cockpit experience smoother and more convenient than ever.

At the top of the range, the 4X4 360 model offers 360hp from a four-wheel drive plug-in hybrid engine. The black trim adds a seductive aesthetic which is only enhanced by 21-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.

NEW DS 3 E-TENSE

With all new cars set to require zero tailpipe emissions from 2035, you may be more inclined to skip the hybrid stage and go fully electric. If this is the case, the DS 3 E-TENSE could be the way to go.

This compact SUV has a great range of 250 miles and you can use an app to see how quickly it is charging – particularly useful on longer journeys. However, it can recharge to 80% in just 30 minutes.

A colour head-up display means you don’t have to take your eyes off the road for key information, while 360-degree video assistance makes manoeuvres like parking far easier.
