AFC Energy has been awarded a contract to supply a 100kW alkaline fuel cell system to smart city demonstrator in Germany.
The German government published a €9bn hydrogen plan in June. AFC Energy hopes its technology can earn a share of the spoils.
The 100kW H-Power unit will be deployed at The Living Lab Energy Campus being developed by research institution Jülich. It aims to create a blueprint for the design of sustainable energy systems for distributed microgrid applications and smart cities.
The 100kW unit will initially be fuelled by hydrogen produced via electrolysis, though Jülich ultimately intends to use hydrogen stored and released locally via a liquid organic hydrogen carrier.
“We welcome the opportunity to be part of such a high profile international showcase alongside several of Germany’s leading technology and research institutes,” said AFC Energy CEO, Adam Bond. He noted that the lab would develop “a system whose blueprint can be deployed across any number of smart cities around the world”.
