Solar developers get green light for 10MW battery storage scheme in PerthshireDistributed energy firm Capbal has secured planning consent from Perth & Kinross Council for its first 10MW/5MWh battery storage unit in Scotland.

The Braco project is Capbal’s first storage scheme in the country to secure planning consent, and the firm has lodged a number of others, including a 10MW scheme in Forfar.

Capbal’s directors are also involved in some significant UK solar farms, including the 50MW Scottow Moor Solar development in Norfolk.

The Braco facility will connect into the local electricity grid, managed by Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks.

A company spokesperson said the firm’s projects are designed to chase all available revenue streams and that, while it currently expects the Braco facility to enter operation in mid-2019, that connection date is dependent on both national and regional grid operators. It hopes to bring the project forward to late 2018 if possible.

NEC will provide the battery units.

Capbal founder and CEO David Fyffe said the firm was “delighted” to get the green light for the development and that its project pipeline, if consented, “will provide greater energy security and support the country’s moves towards a low-carbon energy system”.
