A new clean power developer launched this week in Edinburgh, buoyed with £ 24 million worth of backing from industry giant SSE.

Renewco Power, co-led by former Solarcentury boss Frans van den Heuvel and ex-Forsa Energy supremo Alan Baker, aims to bring forward at least 4 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2026 in the UK and across Europe.    Around a quarter of that goal is in early stage progression, the company said.

The start-up’s leadership includes CEO Gavin McCallum, formerly of BP Alternative Energy. Its chief commercial officer is Alp Karli, founder of Value Renewables.    Renewco’s investments will be overseen by Romain Keyen, previously of Scottish Equity Partners.

The team was assembled by Gary Le Sueur, recent founder of clean tech fund Corran Capital. Le Sueur chairs the start-up, and will be joined by SGN Smart’s Derrick Allan.

Its leadership has a record of successfully developing over 10GW of renewables in 50 countries.

“Renewco has a unique blend of entrepreneurial talent with deep power sector and financial expertise which we will use to accelerate new developments across Europe,” said McCallum.

“We will be growing our team over the coming months, adding further commercial expertise to accelerate the delivery of our strategy.”
