City of York Council is investing £2.2m in two EV charging ‘hyper hubs’, both due to open in June this year.
The council is working in partnership with Evo Energy to construct the sites next to Monks Cross and Poppleton Bar Park and Rides, which are designed to be used by private car owners, taxi drivers and business users.
They will each consist of solar PV canopies (100kWp), battery energy storage (348kW/507kWh), as well as four rapid (50kW) and four ultra rapid (150kW) EV chargers.
The council says the technology used at the sites will enable it to maintain lower tariffs than those of commercial operators.
Along with £400,000 of its own capital funding for the project, the council secured £1m of European Regional Development money and £800,000 from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.
Cllr Andy D’Agorne, executive member for transport at City of York Council, said, “The two hyper hubs will support the next generation of plug-in vehicles – delivering high quality, high-speed electric vehicle charging hubs for residents and visitors.
“The project works alongside our Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy, which will provide a high quality charging network that meets the needs of residents, fleets, and through traffic.
“To guarantee the best result for residents, we plan to continue to own our charging network. This allows us to plan how the network will grow, set tariffs, makes us directly accountable and enables us to deliver next generation chargers as quickly as possible.”
