Carmakers are stepping up plans to use electric vehicle (EV) batteries to help balance power grids.
Volkswagen is set to launch an energy company, while Nissan suggests 2019 is potentially a “breakthrough year” for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services.
Meanwhile, a number of large scale EV charging infrastructure deals have been announced in recent months.
While very early days for V2G, EV battery packs could in future deliver significant storage capacity. National Grid projects “useful” levels of storage from EVs from 2030 in its most recent Future Energy Scenarios, as much as 8GW by 2040, and 13GW in 2050.
However, that will hinge on energy suppliers, carmakers and other parties convincing EV owners to cede control of their batteries.
In a new podcast recorded with The Energyst, Kinect Energy Group’s Adam Pigott and Nik Holland suggest vehicle-to-grid services will ultimately become mainstream. But they say strong commercial propositions will be key to unlocking EVs as energy storage.
The two also discuss the impact of EV infrastructure on energy consumption, site capacity and contracts, as well as the implications for the broader electricity system, plus how incoming regulatory change will affect business energy strategies.
