Facebook to build new Ireland data centre

The internet giant uses the country as its global headquarters and announced the move this week. The facility will reportedly cost around £150 million.

Facebook said the data centre would be one of the most advanced and efficient in the world and will be powered by 100% renewable electricity from Ireland’s wind resource. Facebook has committed to powering half of its infrastructure from renewable sources within the next three years.

“All the racks, servers, and other components have been designed and built from scratch as part of the Open Compute Project, an industry-wide coalition of companies dedicated to creating energy- and cost-efficient infrastructure solutions and sharing them as open source,” said the company.
