Former Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan will become chairman at Electricity North West in October.

Buchanan spent a decade helming the regulator. On his watch it came up with ‘project discovery’, which influenced what became electricity market reform, government’s bid to create policy that enabled security of supply and decarbonisation while maintaining affordability, the so-called ‘trilemma’.

Buchanan joined ENW as a non-exec director two years ago.

Chief executive, Peter Emery, thanked outgoing chair John Roberts for his six year commitment to the role. He said Buchanan’s experience “will be invaluable” as the network prepares for “a challenging outlook” of peak demand doubling over the next 18 years.

The DNO has committed to achieving net zero by 2038.

Electricity distribution firms will have noted with interest Ofgem’s draft price control plans for their gas and power transmission counterparts.
