Gas networks scope fuelling their fleets with hydrogen

Two regional gas networks are sizing up hydrogen’s potential to run their fleets of service vehicles as they strive to cut carbon emissions.

Northern Gas Networks and Wales and West Utilities are working with Cenex and EIC to determined the infrastructure required.

Because hydrogen fuel cell variants are not yet commercially available, Cenex will data map existing service journeys using telematics and work out how alternatively-fuelled vehicles would perform and best locations for refuelling stations.

Hydrogen-generated power for tools operating in remote locations is also part of the study.

Northern Gas Networks fleet manager Sarah Cooper-Birkenhead said the firm wants half of its fleet to be ultra-low emissions by 2026.
