Government moves to bring shale gas planning under its remit

Government is consulting on bringing planning permission for shale gas production under its remit.

The consultation, which closes in October, seeks views on timings and criteria for major shale gas production projects to be included in the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project regime.

The regime gives powers to the secretary of state, rather than local planning, meaning the department for business, energy and industrial strategy (Beis) would have the final say on granting or refusing final development consent.

The regime would apply to production projects, leaving powers with local planners for exploration or appraisal projects.
