Gridimp builds on small business DSR plans with latest installation

Gridimp, a start-up trying to build an artificial intelligence-driven approach to demand-side response for smaller companies, has installed its technology at the Somerset Energy Innovation Centre (SEIC) in Bridgwater.

The test sees its hub integrated into the existing BMS, enabling the innovation centre to assess energy usage patterns and control assets in response to calls from National Grid or other potential forms of flexibility revenue.

The company believes its automated approach will be simple enough for anyone to use and its technology learns consumption patterns so that it becomes less and less likely to do anything disruptive to a businesses’ core operations.

Gridimp says its system interfaces with existing BMS’s, battery storage and onsite generation and supports phased entry into DSR markets.

At the innovation centre, the integration was completed within two days. Centre director, Ben Powis, said it was useful to see “just how easily this sophisticated technology can be integrated” and that the centre is keen to see how the hub responds as it learns day-to-day consumption patterns.

Gridimp was awarded almost £1m from the government’s non-domestic DSR competition last summer. It is also working on another project in the South West with support from EDF Energy’s R&D division.

As well as SMEs, the company ultimately hopes to bring households into demand-side response.
