Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle charger aims to solve capacity crunch

1

Hydrogen power firm AFC Energy has launched a rapid electric vehicle hydrogen fuel cell charger aimed at areas where grid capacity is constrained, or lacking entirely.

Firms installing rapid chargers nationwide have suggested around one in four sites are too constrained to accommodate infrastructure. Others have described finding suitable sites as akin to a game of “battleships”, where the cost of grid upgrades can blow the business case out of the water. AFC Energy believes its alkaline-based fuel cell system, which can power between two and 100 charge points at a single site, can sidestep those challenges.

“There are many areas where infrastructure is constraining mass deployment of chargers,” said AFC Energy CEO, Adam Bond. “Our system is independent of the grid and delivers EV charging in the most remote off-grid locations or in highly populated urban areas where supply is over-subscribed.”

AFC says the containerised system is modular and can be networked with complimentary technologies and claims environmental controls mean it can be deployed anywhere. The firm also touts its ability to source hydrogen through third party suppliers.

  1. Great article, Brendan! Completely agree with you. The number of chargers and infrastructure are holding hydrogen power back. But this alkaline based fuel cell system seems like a game changer. Can’t wait to see how things pan out.
