Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said its Jaguar brand will be all-electric by 2025 as it looks to become a net zero carbon business by 2039.
The company will launch EV models of its entire Jaguar and Land Rover line-up by 2030 and keep all three of its three British plants at Solihull, Castle Bromwich and Halewood open as part of its new strategy.
However, JLR said its Castle Bromwich plant would focus on “non-production” activities in the long term.
The company will also invest about £2.5bn per year on electrification technology as well as development of linked vehicle services.
In addition, it aims to develop hydrogen fuel cells and wants the first prototype vehicles to be driving on UK roads within the next year.
JLR also plans to unveil six fully-electric Land Rover models before 2025.
A statement from JLR said: “By the middle of the decade Jaguar will have undergone a renaissance to emerge as a pure electric luxury brand with a dramatically beautiful new portfolio of emotionally engaging designs and pioneering next-generation technologies.”
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, added, “Its (Jaguar Land Rover’s) roadmap to a future that is built around sustainability, with electrified and hydrogen models as well as investment in connected and digital technologies, aligns with Government ambition and increasing consumer expectations.
“Government must ensure advanced manufacturing has its full support, with a policy framework and plan for growth that reduces costs, accelerates domestic battery production and electrified supply chains, and incentivises R&D and skills development.
“Every effort must be made to create the conditions that will enable the entire sector to flourish.”
