Mercedes-Benz to launch six new EVs by 2022

Final preparations for the production of battery systems for the Mercedes-Benz EQS are currently underway at the Untertürkheim/Hedelfingen battery factory

Mercedes-Benz has announced it will introduce six new battery electric vehicles by 2022 through its EQ brand.

It is the first time the manufacturer has confirmed launch dates for the EVs, which have all previously been confirmed as in the pipeline. The luxury EQS sedan, which will be produced at the firm’s plant in Sindelfingen, Germany,will be the initial EQ model launched, in the first half of next year.

Next year Mercedes will introduce the EQA, a compact SUV to be produced at its factory in Rastatt, Germany and Beijing, China. The bigger EQB will also be launched in 2021, with production in Kecskemet, Hungary as well as Beijing.

By the end of 2021 Mercedes will start production of the EQE, which it is marketing as a business sedan. Its factory in Bremen, Germany will make the vehicles for the European market, with production also beginning in Beijing.

In 2022, Mercedes will also introduce a pair of SUVs, the EQE and EQS, that will be produced in Tuscaloosa, USA.

The manufacturer now has a worldwide battery production network, with plants in Germany, Poland, USA, China and Thailand.

Markus Schäfer, board member for research and chief operating officer, Mercedes-Benz Cars said, “We intend to lead in the field of e-mobility and focus in particular on battery technology. We are taking a comprehensive approach, ranging from research and development to production, and also including strategic cooperation.”

Jörg Burzer, board member for Production and Supply Chain added, “The production network will have a total of six Mercedes-EQ car locations. Local production of highly efficient battery systems plays a central role in the Mercedes-Benz strategy – coupled with a comprehensive sustainability concept that spans the entire life cycle of the battery all the way to recycling.”
