Mitie has committed to double energy productivity over the next 25 years and has joined the EP100 initiative, run by The Climate Group.
The FM company is aiming to hit net zero by 2025. To do that, it has outlined a plan to eradicate carbon emissions from power and transport and embark on a major building efficiency and waste reduction programme.
Sustainability director, Simon King, accepts it will still have to offset some “residual” emissions – which are not going to be addressable within five years.
But the firm says improving energy productivity is a cornerstone of its plan – and is confident it can actually hit the EP100 target by 2025.
Energy productivity is an overarching concept, of which energy efficiency is a component: Improving energy productivity means getting more economic output out of every unit of energy consumed, according to EP100.
So it looks at the bigger economic picture as opposed to focusing purely on making equipment, processes or buildings more energy efficient. Proponents believe it helps frame energy in terms that appeal to finance departments and investment committees.
EP100 is one of three programmes run by The Climate Group, alongside EV100, which asks members to commit to electrifying their vehicle fleets; and RE100, where members commit to buying renewable power.
