Facilities management firm Mitie has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2025.
The firm now has five years to decarbonise, but says that by attempting to do so it can show other businesses, including existing and new clients, that decarbonisation is possible.
Mitie said there are three pillars to its ‘Plan Zero’:
- Eliminate carbon emissions from power and transport
- Eradicate non-sustainable waste
- Enhance inefficient buildings to meet the highest environmental standards
The firm is already making some headway in transport. It now has 300 EVs on the road and is adding around 75 a month, according to director of sustainability, Simon King. Mitie has also pledged to decarbonise its heating systems and switch to 100 per cent renewable electricity, as well as using smart building technology to maximise energy efficiency. It is also removing single use materials from the business.
King said it is imperative that Mitie attempts rapid decarbonisation, given it aims to do the same for businesses that pay for its services.
He said the firm, which buys some 10TWh of renewable power per annum for clients, has sufficient in-house know how to decarbonise most of its operations, though admitted some offsetting will be required.
“So we are positioned to do this. It is a really stretching target, but one we genuinely believe we can get to.”
