New GeniePoint EV charging points across Bromsgrove

Bromsgrove District Council has launched a rapid charging scheme, in partnership with Engie, giving local taxi drivers the opportunity to charge their EVs free for the first year.

A total of 13 GeniePoint Network rapid chargers will be installed and commissioned by contractors BMM Energy Solutions at locations across the area for taxi drivers and public use.

The council says further substantial discounts will be available to drivers for the next nine years, as it looks to encourage the uptake of EVs in the area.

It follows Bromsgrove District Council being awarded funding for the provision of EV charging under the Government’s Ultra Low Emission Taxi Infrastructure Scheme, with the first location to see a charge point installed and live being Bromsgrove’s Windsor Street Car Park.

Funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) with Engie support, it has enabled Bromsgrove District Council to work with land owners in the area to identify and secure the most suitable sites.

The chargers will provide drivers with the choice of contactless charging for fast ‘stop and charge’ access via credit or debit card, or access via the GeniePoint app.

Jerry Moloney, managing director for Engie’s Futures business, said, “The rollout of Bromsgrove District Council’s GeniePoint network is an exciting step towards improving EV infrastructure in the locality, and with considerable discounts offered to Bromsgrove-registered taxi drivers we hope it will encourage a great number of drivers to make the switch to EV.

“Local authorities play a key role in supporting the uptake of electric vehicles by both individuals and businesses through the provision of publicly-available infrastructure, and we’re pleased to be working with Bromsgrove District Council in this latest rollout as we work towards supporting the UK’s wider commitment to become net zero by 2050.”

Judith Willis, head of service covering Bromsgrove District Council’s Climate Change processes added, “The project is a huge step forward in developing and implementing clean transport options for our residents and providing EV users from neighbouring areas and elsewhere in the UK the opportunity to stop or visit Bromsgrove on their travels.”
