Npower fined £7 for service failings, agrees to pay £26 million

800px-3D_Judges_GavelRWE Npower’s seven energy supply companies have been slapped with a fine of £1 each by energy regulator Ofgem, on the proviso the suppliers agree to pay £26 million in redress for customer service failings.

The penalty was imposed because of its failure to address billing system issues for a number of years. That meant hundreds of thousands of customers received late, inaccurate bills.

The issue was restricted to domestic rather than business customers. In the non-domestic market, the regulator’s investigation into British Gas for similar rule breaches to those committed by business energy supplier BES remains ongoing.
