The power of God: Churches convert to renewable electricity

Nicholas Holtam: Climate change an enormous injustice

The Church of England’s procurement group, Parish Buying, is buying renewable electricity through Total Gas & Power.

Thousands of churches and cathedrals have now converted to renewable power. As a result, British churches have diverted millions of pounds from fossil fuels to clean energy.

An organised ‘big switch’ campaign earlier this summer is another route open to churches to buy green power.

Nicholas Holtam, the Bishop of Salisbury and the Church of England’s lead bishop on the environment, said: “It’s fantastic to see churches doing their bit to ensure they reduce their impact on the environment. They are also giving a boost to clean energy, which is essential to reduce harmful carbon emissions.

“Climate change is an enormous injustice and is hurting the poor first and worst. Switching to responsible sources of electricity may seem like a small thing on its own, but when joined together it can make a real difference.”

Mark Rose, Total Gas & Power’s director of major business, said: “Total has made a commitment to provide cost-effective, reliable and clean energy to as many people as possible and supplying the Church of England with 100% renewable electricity is a great example of how we are doing this.”
