Smart grids take centre stage at DCW 2019

What are data centres going to look like in the future and what will this mean in terms of power? Riello UPS’s General Manager, Leo Craig, recently addressed some of the industry’s key questions at Data Centre World, held at London’s Excel. Leading an expert panel discussion, ‘Powering The Data Centres Of The Future’ , Craig and the panel explored a range of hot topics, from  fuel cells and renewables, to energy storage.

Speaking to MCP, he commented that the evolution of ‘the edge’ will have a significant influence on future UPS design, with modular solutions coming to the fore, along with increasing power densities. Footprint will also decrease and UPS will become more intelligent, to meet the demands of smaller, distributed edge sites.

Showcasing innovation

Through out the two days, the company’s stand was a buzz of activity. Many visitors wanted to learn more about the Riello UPS 5 year warranty, which covers all uninterruptible power supplies up to and including 3 kVA, and the company’s comprehensive range of UPS maintenance, installation, and repair services. Others highlights on the stand included the award-winning modular Multi Power (MPW), the super-efficient NextEnergy (NXE), and the recently expanded Sentinel Dual (SDU).

Rethinking the role of a UPS

This year’s show also offered the thousands of attendees a glimpse into the future of mission-critical IT infrastructure with the ‘6th Generation Data Centre’ showcase.

Riello UPS played a leading role in this exciting new concept with an eye-catching hologram depicting how the UK’s shift towards smart grids gives the industry a chance to rethink the role of a UPS. Deploying smart grid-ready UPS can help transform a data centre into a ‘virtual power plant’:

  • Turn rigid power users to flexible power generators
  • Integrate battery storage with renewable sources and onsite generation
  • Cut electricity costs thanks to reduced peak-demand power consumption
  • Enhance resilience through premium batteries with advanced monitoring
  • Provide financial incentives to feed power into the National Grid (i.e. Demand Side Response, Frequency Response)

For those who missed Riello UPS at DCW 2019, there will be further opportunities to meet the Riello UPS team at events throughout 2019 (click here for a full list), including:

  • IP EXPO Manchester (3-4 April)
  • DCS Awards 2019 (16 May)
  • Electrical Review Excellence Awards 2019 (30 May)
  • IP EXPO Europe (9-10 October)
