Some MPs and lords have suggested the smart meter plan might be sub-optimal, in a new report.
Signed by Grant Schapps, the report questions the logic of the ‘supplier-led’ rollout and underpinning policy.
It concludes that benefits may be smaller than assumed by wonks attempting to read auguries about a decade ago.
The report notes that smart meters aren’t mandatory and suppliers just have to try to install them, but that even where they have succeeded to date, through foul means and fair, many of the meters aren’t up to the job, and will need to be replaced.
It makes a number of recommendations for policymakers and regulators in order to safeguard consumers and bring the programme back on track.
