The first vehicles in China to be built on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive (MEB) EV platform have gone into production.

Its plants in Anting and Foshan have begun production on the new Volkswagen ID.4 Crozz and SAIC Volkswagen ID.4 X cars, due to be launched early next year.

The factories have a combined total planned annual capacity of 600,000 units which Volkswagen believes will enable it to increase the share of electric vehicles in its product portfolio in China to 35% by 2025.

Anting is Volkswagen Group’s first greenfield MEB plant anywhere in the world and is 100% dedicated to the manufacture of pure-electric vehicles.

Volkswagen has implemented energy-saving eco-friendly measures at the sites, including solar photovoltaic power generation, improved heat-exchange systems, intelligent light controls, waste management and rainwater recycling.

The MEB platform has been designed to support all new fully electric models from VW Group brands including Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen.

According to Volkswagen the architecture aims to consolidate electronic controls and reduce the number of microprocessors, as well as advance the application of new driver-assistance technology.

Ford also plans to use the MEB platform to deliver its own new Ford-branded electric vehicles.

Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China said, “Our ID. family, based on the MEB platform, will be an industry game-changer and will revolutionise the new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

“The MEB provides unique versatility and is an incredibly flexible platform for vehicle production, meaning we can offer customers a wide range of highly attractive electric models, from compact city cars to spacious buses or SUVs.

“The start of production at the first two MEB plants in China is a true milestone and will take our e-mobility push mainstream, making quality NEVs affordable for many people.”
