Volvo to be fully electric brand by 2030

Volvo Cars plans to roll out several additional EVs over the coming years and says by 2030, every car it sells will be fully electric.

By 2025, it aims for 50% of its global sales to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids.

The manufacturer expects that legislation as well as a rapid expansion of accessible high-quality charging infrastructure will accelerate consumer acceptance of fully electric cars.

Volvo Cars launched its first fully electric car, the XC40 Recharge, in markets around the globe last year and has just revealed its second fully electric car – the C40 Recharge.

Propulsion for the C40 Recharge consists of twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged to 80 per cent in about 40 minutes.

It offers an anticipated range of around 261 miles.

The C40 Recharge, which is expected to go into production this autumn, is based on the CMA vehicle platform and is the first Volvo model in history designed as pure electric only.

All pure electric Volvo models will be available online only.

Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive of Volvo Cars said, “To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future – electric and online.

“We are fully focused on becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric segment.”

Henrik Green, chief technology officer at Volvo Cars added, “There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine.

“We are firmly committed to becoming an electric-only car maker and the transition should happen by 2030. It will allow us to meet the expectations of our customers and be a part of the solution when it comes to fighting climate change.”
