Whisky distillery toasts 15% energy bill savings from LPG

Whatever a business’s size, energy costs can represent a significant percentage of its overheads. That said, the larger the operation and the more energy-intensive its requirements, the greater the opportunity to reap big cost and carbon savings by switching to a more efficient fuel.

This is especially true for off-grid commercial premises, many of which are still relying on oil – known for its price instability and relatively high carbon emissions. That’s why many of these businesses are now making the switch to a more cost-effective, cleaner solution – LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). LPG emits 12% less carbon than oil, and as a result, costs less to run. Flogas Britain, a leading UK LPG supplier, has more than 30 years’ experience helping off-grid businesses of all shapes and sizes make the transition from oil to gas. Below are two real-life examples of the financial savings businesses can achieve.

Case 1: Tomatin whisky distillery

Nestled in an off-grid location in the Scottish Highlands, the Tomatin Distillery – which produces more than two million litres of whisky a year – historically relied on heavy fuel oil and coal to meet its substantial energy requirements.

With the need to reduce its fuel costs and carbon footprint, Tomatin initially introduced a biomass boiler. However, the biomass system alone was unable to supply enough energy for the entire energy-intensive distilling process. Tomatin was left with an inefficient, expensive and polluting oil boiler to fulfil the shortfall.

After consulting with others in the industry, Tomatin turned to Flogas to convert the oil boiler to LPG. The conversion has seen the distillery reduce its energy costs by more than 15%, and its annual carbon emissions by an impressive 560 tonnes – a significant saving of almost 20%.

Case 2: Carden Park Hotel

Set within a picturesque 1,000-acre estate in Cheshire, the luxury Carden Park Hotel boasts 196 bedrooms, 18 meeting rooms, a spa, two championship golf courses, two restaurants and 10 wedding ceremony venues, as well as a three-acre vineyard.

With more than 20,000 guests visiting the off-grid hotel each year, a significant amount of energy was needed to power its heating, hot water and cooking facilities – so it was vital for the hotel to find a reliable, cost-effective and efficient energy solution.

Carden Park switched its entire energy supply from oil to LPG. Flogas managed the conversion from start to finish, and fitted 10 LPG tanks discreetly underground in the vineyard to ensure they didn’t impact the landscape for guests and visitors. The conversion has seen the hotel reduce its energy costs by a substantial 21.8%, while reducing carbon emissions by an impressive 23%.
