Fastned has opened two North East ultra-rapid charging stations, situated close to Newcastle Airport and in Sunderland.

Its airport hub, which has 12 drive-through bays under a full canopy, is located at Callerton Parkway Metro station, one stop from Newcastle Airport.

The Sunderland site is situated at North Moor Road and features an initial six charging bays with Fastned’s yellow ‘wings’, together with new Costa Coffee and Greggs outlets.

Wide bays make parking and manoeuvring user-friendly, including for drivers using wheelchairs or mobility aids, and there are suspended cable systems.

The sites are designed with bright, open layouts using clear sightlines, high-quality lighting, CCTV coverage and some sites include a toilet.

Fastned now operates 13 sites across the North East and it has already supported more than 273,000 charging sessions since it opened its ultra-rapid hub at West Wear Street, Sunderland in 2019.

Tom Hurst, UK country director at Fastned, said, “These hubs are now fully operational and form part of our growing network of 13 sites in the North East, already supporting hundreds of thousands of charging sessions, helping people travel sustainably across the North East.

“So, whether you’re heading to the airport, visiting family and friends, or heading further afield to explore seasonal events such as local markets, or simply going about your day, there’s now faster, greener charging options available.”

Councillor Martin Gannon, cabinet member for transport at the North East Combined Authority, said, “We are leading the way in installing new charge points across the region, and welcome this latest addition, as the North East becomes the home of the green energy revolution.”
