Aegis Energy has begun construction work on its new Sheffield alternative refuelling hub designed to serve more than 100 commercial vehicles per day.
The facility at Smithywood Business Park, close to junction 35 of the M1, will provide EV charging and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for vans and trucks.
It is due to open in spring next year and forms part of Aegis’ plans to build a national network of energy hubs serving every major motorway and freight corridor in the UK by 2030.
The development will also include secure overnight parking and driver welfare facilities.
Aegis Energy predicts that the electric charging provided by the hub could avoid up to 1.34 million tonnes of CO2e between 2026 and 2060 compared with a diesel forecourt.
It said this would be equivalent to removing about 760 diesel HGVs from UK roads each year once the site reaches maturity.
This calculation is based on Department for Energy Security and Net Zero conversion factors and an annual vehicle mileage of 44,740 miles.
