Europe’s largest energy industry event 7-9th May at Messe München

Renewable electricity is the new standard – in Germany, it made up around 60% of net power generation in 2024. But this increase in green energy brings new challenges. A recent Eurelectric and EY study shows that Europe’s demand for energy flexibility will double by 2030. Daily flexibility needs will rise 2.4 times, and weekly needs 1.8 times compared to 2021 – stretching current systems to their limits.

One promising solution: electric vehicle (EV) batteries. In the next five years, EVs could offer 114 TWh of battery capacity – a largely untapped resource. To spotlight this potential, The smarter E Europe is hosting its first special exhibit on bidirectional charging.

From May 7–9, 2025, around 3,000 exhibitors and over 110,000 visitors are expected at Messe München for Europe’s largest energy industry event. The exhibit will showcase technologies like vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home, and how they support grid stability.

Dr. Frank Spennemann (Mercedes-Benz) emphasizes the key role of bidirectional charging in the energy transition. In France, Renault and The Mobility House are already enabling EV batteries to serve the grid, offering free charging in return. “EV batteries are ideal storage systems,” says Marcus Fendt of The Mobility House. “Most cars are parked 23 hours a day, and average daily energy needs are just 8 kWh.”

Located in Hall C6 next to the Power2Drive Forum, the special exhibit offers live demos, expert talks, and real-world use cases from Europe and beyond. Forums will feature seven sessions on vehicle-to-X topics, five within the Power2Drive Forum. Daily guided tours (11:30am and 3:30pm) will provide in-depth insights into the technology and its applications.

Partners include Eurelectric, E-Mobility Europe, FfE, Lade GmbH, and The Mobility House. Sponsors Sigenergy and Bi-CCS help make the exhibit possible.

As Europe’s largest alliance of exhibitions for the energy industry, The smarter E Europe unites four exhibitions (Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe) and will take place at Messe München from May 7–9, 2025.
