Mitsubishi Electric air-to-air heat pumps are now providing heating and cooling to The Northern Club, helping its historic clubhouse remain comfortable throughout the year.
Located in Sefton, North Liverpool and dating back to 1859, The Northern Club occupies a privately run sports venue built in the early 1900s and offers facilities for cricket, crown green bowling, squash and hockey. Around 2,000 schoolchildren also use the club’s facilities each year, providing opportunities for young people to participate in sport.
The historic building presented a significant heating challenge, with its age, limited insulation, large viewing windows and raised flooring all contributing to heat loss. The large windows also left little space for additional radiators, making both heating and cooling difficult.
The club worked closely with installer partner TDC and Mitsubishi Electric to develop a heat pump system suited to the age and construction of the building. This involved the installation of three Mitsubishi Electric MUZ-AP71/MSZ-AP71 air-to-air heat pump systems which provide rapid heating during the winter and cooling throughout the summer. These are also Wi-Fi enabled via the MELCloud app, allowing the club to manage temperatures, operating modes and schedules remotely.
“Before the installation, I would arrive at the club at 6am and switch on one of the gas boilers, but by 3pm the room would only have reached around 15°C,” said Wendy McDowall, President of The Northern Club (pictured above). “Now I can switch the heat pumps on and within ten minutes the room reaches a comfortable temperature, and they automatically maintain it throughout the day. I only wish we had installed them years ago.”
The partnership has seen the club enter a planned preventative maintenance contract with TDC, a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Quality Partner, with the equipment also covered by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.
“The Northern Club needed a heating and cooling solution that would allow its rooms to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the year, while working around the challenges of retrofitting an ageing building,” said Jo Lambert, Air Conditioning Expert at Mitsubishi Electric. “By providing a system that aligns with the clubhouse’s specific requirements, the Northern Club can now benefit from energy-efficient heating during the colder months and the relief of cooling when temperatures rise, creating comfortable spaces for members and guests to enjoy whatever the season.”
