The 10MW/37MWh Pelkosenniemi project marks PowerEdge’s entry into utility-scale battery energy storage market in Finland, with Gridle selected as its long-term optimisation and trading partner.

Swiss-based PowerEdge has selected Elisa Industriq’s Gridle as the long-term optimisation, trading and route-to-market partner for a 10MW/37MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Pelkosenniemi, northern Finland.

Gridle will take responsibility for bringing the battery to the electricity market, using AI-powered multi-market optimisation and trading to maximise its long-term commercial value.

PowerEdge has been responsible for the wider project coordination, structuring and development. The project is majority-owned by renewable energy investment platform Frigg, which has led the financing work.

For PowerEdge, the Pelkosenniemi project reflects how the Finnish battery market is evolving, with increasing balancing-market saturation driving BESS projects towards multiple revenue streams.

“We do not believe the opportunity in Finland is disappearing, but it is changing. The projects being built for the next market cycle need to capture value from a broader and more volatile set of markets. That is one of the reasons we are focusing on four-hour and potentially even longer-duration storage,” says Anssi Laitinen, CEO and co-founder of PowerEdge.

Pelkosenniemi is PowerEdge’s first utility-scale BESS project in Finland and an important step in the company’s plans to build a broader Finnish energy storage portfolio. PowerEdge selected Gridle following an evaluation of optimisation capabilities, operational reliability and long-term partnership potential.

“For an asset of this size and duration, we needed an optimisation partner capable of working across several markets. Gridle’s experience with longer-duration batteries, strong optimisation capabilities and ability to adapt the strategy as the Finnish market evolves were key factors in our decision,” says Panu Kärävä, Head of Projects at PowerEdge.

With 37MWh of energy capacity and approximately four hours of storage duration, the battery can combine balancing-market participation with more energy-intensive trading opportunities.

“Long-duration batteries require sophisticated optimisation as value shifts between balancing and wholesale markets. Having optimized longer-duration batteries for more than five years, we bring expertise that is increasingly valuable for utility-scale BESS investors. We are pleased to support PowerEdge and Frigg in maximising the long-term value of the Pelkosenniemi investment,” says Markus Logren, Gridle Business Lead at Elisa Industriq.

The Pelkosenniemi battery project is currently under construction, with commercial operations expected to begin in early 2027.
