Sainsbury’s has opened a Smart Charge ultra-rapid EV charging hub at its superstore in Heaton Park, Greater Manchester, open 24 hours a day.

The facility at the store, located close to Junction 19 of the M60, includes eight new 150kW bays, allowing customers to charge an EV in 30 minutes with sustainable power for 200 miles of travel.

Smart Charge is available via 619 ultra-rapid charging bays at 75 Sainsbury’s locations and offers customers loyalty benefits from loyalty programme, Nectar.

It is the first and only EV charging business to be fully owned and managed end-to-end by a supermarket

The launch marks the charge point operator’s fifth Smart Charge location in Greater Manchester.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Director of Property, Procurement & EV Ventures, said, “We’ve reached a fantastic milestone in the rollout of Smart Charge with the launch of our 75th site.

“We know that a lack of readily available public charging points and long wait times to use existing services can be barriers to EV adoption in the UK, and we’re on a mission to improve this wherever we can.

“With ultra-rapid charging points in more locations than ever before, we’re focused on expanding our Smart Charge Network in key areas up and down the country where we know the demand is highest.

“We hope EV drivers will enjoy the added convenience and choice our new Heaton Park hub provides, giving them confidence that they can top up or do a full charge at our fifth Greater Manchester location.”
