SmartestEnergy launches graduate scheme to build future energy trading talent

SmartestEnergy has launched a new two-year graduate programme designed to train the next generation of energy traders.

The programme will launch out of SmartestEnergy’s London office with a selective intake and structured rotations, providing graduates with the depth of experience needed to launch long-term careers in energy trading. Participants will gain hands-on exposure across pricing, market risk, forecasting, renewables, regulation and spend an extended placement on the trading desk. They could also have the chance to pursue globally recognised professional certifications, including CFA, Energy Risk Professional and technical analyst pathways.

Graduates will also receive training in digital tools such as Python and SQL, ensuring they are building the skills needed to work effectively in an increasingly data-driven, digital-first energy market. Crucially, they will graduate from the scheme ready to trade independently, confidently and responsibly.

Mahul Raval, Senior Vice President of Trading, SmartestEnergy, said, “Energy markets are becoming increasingly complex, and the UK needs people who can operate with confidence in a fast-changing environment. The scheme will give our graduates meaningful responsibility from day one, building the technical and commercial skills needed to trade responsibly in the energy transition.”

The programme reflects SmartestEnergy’s commitment to people and culture. With initiatives to support diversity in trading and a strong focus on gender balance and inclusion through its partnership with Women Utilities Network (WUN), the company is working to broaden participation in the energy sector while developing the next generation of leaders.

Caroline Pear, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, SmartestEnergy, said, “We’re creating opportunities for ambitious graduates to develop both professionally and personally, with mentorship, structured learning and international exposure. Backed by Marubeni Corporation, we combine the entrepreneurial spirit of a growing UK business with the global perspective of an international group. This ensures we’re giving our people the chance to shape the energy system of tomorrow while growing in a supportive and dynamic environment.”

Toby Smith, apprentice at SmartestEnergy, said, “SmartestEnergy has been a really supportive environment to start my career. I’ve had opportunities to take on responsibility, build new skills, and learn from people who are genuinely invested in helping apprentices succeed.”

Backed by the Marubeni Corporation, SmartestEnergy is expanding its trading and digital capabilities globally and the launch of the Graduate Scheme is part of this strategy, building a pipeline of skilled trading professionals to power the transition to net zero.

Applications are now open for the September 2026 intake. More information is available here.
