United Utilities has won a tender to supply all Tesco stores and distribution centres in Scotland.
The utility firm has promised the retailer, which is the largest commercial water user in Scotland, a 20% saving on water bills totalling some £800,000 per annum.
The win comes as incumbent utility firms and new entrants prepare for water competition south of the border in just over a year’s time.
Similar aggressive deals between suppliers and businesses can be expected and the move to open up the market beyond regional monopolies will also likely lead to a boom in water services companies – or total utility companies – touting their ability to cut bills.
Water competition across the UK therefore represents an opportunity for facilities and procurement departments to achieve significant utility bill savings, provided they pick the right partners and technology.
