Asda is spending £1.3m to introduce 112 electric home delivery vans and charging points at its stores across the UK.

The new EVs will more than double the retailer’s electric grocery home shopping fleet to 194 vehicles, as it continues to invest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its business.

By September, 21 Asda stores across the UK will operate a fully electric home delivery van fleet, with these vehicles expected to make more than 1 million deliveries per year.

The new eLCVs – a mix of Ford and Maxus vans with ranges of up to 130 miles – are also expected to save up to 1700kg of CO2 emissions each year.

Asda first rolled out electric delivery fleets at its stores in Gillingham Pier, Old Kent Road and Sheffield Chaucer in 2023.

In 2024, the supermarket also invested in two new Bio-LNG (liquefied natural gas) refuelling facilities.

Working closely with Gasrec – a major fuel provider for commercial vehicles in the UK – the new refuelling facilities in Warrington and Dartford now mean Asda has 13 fully operational Bio-LNG stations strategically located across the UK.

With more than 780 vehicles, the supermarket operates the largest fleet of LNG fuelled trucks in the UK.

Emma Newton, Senior Director – ecommerce last mile for Asda, said, We’re always looking at how we can better serve our customers and for new ways to reduce our carbon emissions as a business, so we’re delighted to be more than doubling our electric fleet of grocery home shopping vehicles.”
