In June 2020 the Prime Minister announced up to £100 million of new research and development funding to help develop direct air capture technologies in the UK. To meet net zero by 2050 direct air capture and other greenhouse gas removals technologies are necessary to offset emissions from hard to tackle areas, such as parts of the agriculture and aviation sectors.
Phase 1 now open to applications
Phase 1 of the Direct Air Capture and other Greenhouse Gas Removals Innovation competition will provide up to £250,000 in funding for design studies looking into developing direct air capture and other greenhouse gas removals technologies.
Deadlines
- register by 30 November 2020
- submit your applications by 5 February 2021
The invitation to tender and documents required to complete an application are available here.
Phase 2
Phase 2 of the competition will take forward the most promising designs from Phase 1, to pilot key components or further develop the design of the new direct air capture and other greenhouse gas removals technologies. Only successful Phase 1 applicants will be considered for further funding in Phase 2.
The competition will take a portfolio approach, aiming to fund a range of different solutions which could include use of biochar, direct air capture, bioenergy carbon capture and storage solutions, removal of CO2 from seawater, and others.
