Micronics U1000 helps measure energy usage in Sheffield Hospital

Five Micronics U1000 flowmeters were used by an installer of building control systems to measure the energy usage in the production of domestic hot water at the Royal Hallamshire hospital in Sheffield.

This was a new project and Building Regulations stipulated that energy usage had to be measured. It was also necessary for the apportioning of costs to various departments.

The hospital’s energy manager did some research and identified that the Micronics unit would perform this task. He called in NE Controls of Newcastle-upon-Tyne to assist.

North East Controls design and install integrated building systems for controlling HVAC systems, lighting and door access, which reduce energy consumption and maximise energy performance whilse maintaining a comfortable environment for building occupants.

Derek Illman, NE Controls’ projects director was very pleased with the performance of the U1000s.

“Since using the Micronics flowmeters in the Royal Hallamshire we have used three more and are looking at using more. I would definitely recommend it,” he said.

The Micronics U1000 is a fixed installation, clamp-on flowmeter that is easy to install and requires the minimum of information to be entered by the user.

It uses a multiple slope transit time algorithm to provide accurate flow measurements.

Unlike other clamp-on flowmeters, the U1000 transducer separation distance is factory preset to the internal diameter (ID) of the application pipe.

The U1000 is compact, robust and consistent and has been designed to provide sustained performance in industrial environments.

Apart from hot water metering and flow measurement as in this case, typical applications include chilled water metering and flow measurement, flow measurement for heat metering and potable water metering.
