Roadchef has expanded its charging hub at Chester services along the M56 with six new Shell Recharge ultra-rapid charging bays.
With combined charging system (CCS) connectors, the 300kW chargers accept contactless payment, provide real-time status updates to car charging apps, and use 100% renewable energy.
The site combines multiple charging technologies, including both CCS and CHAdeMO connectors, across 20 total charging points.
Amenities at the location include a McDonald’s, Costa and WHSmith.
The installation means Chester services now offers among the fastest charging speeds, and one of the largest EV charging areas in the city.
This latest development adds to Roadchef’s 5,160 rapid and ultra-rapid charge points available across the north west of England.
Paul Comer, director of EV implementation at Roadchef, said, “The addition of these new EV chargers at Chester highlights our ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable travel and expanding the EV charging network across the UK.
“We’re delighted that our partnership with Shell has allowed us to enhance our charging facilities and continue to evolve to meet the needs of the modern motorist.”
Last year, Shell Recharge opened its first UK electric public charging station for trucks at the Markham Moor Truck Stop in Nottinghamshire.
The site, which Shell acquired in 2022, is located on the A1, about 25 miles south of Doncaster and 25 miles Southeast of Sheffield and is passed by more than 8,000 HGVs each day.
It features a 400kWh fast charging station, with two connectors, which enables two vehicles to charge at once, powered using 100 per cent renewable electricity.
