EV public charging network Zest has opened a new ultra-rapid hub close to Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The derelict land on Park Road South, which decades ago was the site of Hockley Rail Station, has been transformed into the EV hub with 16 charging bays, capable of speeds up to 300kW.

There are very few ultra-rapid charging options in this part of Birmingham, and at 65p per kWh, Zest says the hub undercuts the local alternatives.

Drivers can pay through the Zest app, using contactless or via roaming partner apps such as Octopus Electroverse and Plugsurfing. Commercial drivers can also charge using the Allstar app.

Also on site is an InPost mail locker.

The opening follows similar urban charging hubs recently launched by Zest in Enfield, Leicester and Bolton as part of its mission to expand EV infrastructure in underserved areas across the UK.

Robin Heap, CEO at Zest, said, “To make electric driving a realistic choice for everyone, charging must be convenient and accessible in every community.

“This new hub in Birmingham helps close the infrastructure gap while supporting the city’s regeneration – bringing cleaner air, attracting investment and helping tackle climate change.

“It’s a step towards a more sustainable future for local people and visitors alike.”

Councillor Chaman Lal, Birmingham City Council, said, “The Jewellery Quarter is one of Birmingham’s most historic and vibrant areas, and investments such as this help secure its future.

“Public EV charging supports not just cleaner travel, but the ongoing regeneration of the area – attracting visitors, supporting businesses, and improving the environment for everyone.”
