National Grid Electricity Distribution’s (NGED) DSO has partnered with energy data technology company Squid to make electricity network model data more accessible and usable for stakeholders across the energy sector.
The collaboration introduces Squid’s CIM Explorer, a platform that converts NGED’s technical network model into a visual, interactive interface. The tool enables users without specialist grid modelling expertise to explore network information in a clear and navigable way.
The initiative aims to address a long-standing challenge in energy data transparency: while large volumes of network data are already published as part of open data commitments, the formats can be difficult for non-specialists to interpret.
By presenting the same underlying information through an intuitive visual interface, CIM Explorer supports more effective engagement with local authorities, energy developers, flexibility providers and consumer groups.
Phil Moseley, Head of System Models & Data at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said, “Open data is a critical enabler of a smarter, more flexible electricity system. But making data available isn’t enough, it also needs to be understandable and usable by our customers who rely on it.
“Our partnership with Squid helps translate complex network models into something that a much wider audience can explore and engage with. That supports better conversations with stakeholders and helps create greater transparency around how the electricity system is evolving.”
The platform allows users to navigate network assets and explore data in a way that reduces reliance on static exports and spreadsheets, which can often lead to confusion or multiple interpretations of the same dataset.
By providing a consistent and explorable view of the network, NGED says the tool will help reduce bespoke data requests and improve the quality of external engagement around network planning and system operation.
Conor Jones, CEO & Co-founder at Squid, said, “Electricity network data is becoming increasingly important as the sector moves toward a more decentralised and flexible system. But the technical formats used to share that data can make it difficult for many stakeholders to engage with it effectively.
“CIM Explorer bridges that gap by turning complex network models into a visual interface that allows people to explore and understand the system more easily.”
As the electricity system evolves to accommodate more renewable generation, flexible demand and low-carbon technologies, NGED says tools that improve transparency and understanding will play an increasingly important role in supporting collaboration across the energy sector.
