Businesses urged to check energy contracts during Energy Saving Week

A LEADING law firm specialising in reclaiming monies through mis-sold energy contracts is urging businesses to discover if they could be owed tens of thousands of pounds this week.

To mark Energy Saving Week, which runs until Sunday, January 25, north east-based Energy Solicitors is advising firms to check their energy contracts if they haven’t already, highlighting that many businesses have unwittingly overpaid due to undisclosed commissions.

Energy Saving Week is a national campaign which aims to encourage people to save energy and cut down on fuel costs, backed by the Energy Saving Trust, Citizens Advice and the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, to offer help and advice to businesses and home owners.

The call follows a recent landmark Supreme Court ruling in Expert Tooling and Automation Limited v Engie Power Limited. The decision clarifies that energy brokers owe business clients a duty of transparency when intermediating energy contracts, confirming that undisclosed commissions are a break of fiduciary duty.

Energy Solicitors is a specialist law firm with a team of experts boasting more than 30 years of litigation experience. Director, Victoria Myers, believes Energy Saving Week presents the perfect opportunity for firms across the country to take a look at their contracts.

“The Expert Tooling settlement is a landmark moment and means energy suppliers can no longer hide behind secrecy or complex broker arrangement,” she said.

“It also comes at the perfect time, with Energy Saving Week bringing the idea of how people can save on their energy bills to public attention.

“For too long, many businesses have struggled in silence but now they can move forward with the confidence to take advice and reclaim these undisclosed commission payments. It’s something the team at Energy Solicitors is passionate about and we look forward to working with firms to help challenge unfair practices.”
