Central London’s electricity network has been boosted after UK Power Networks replaced over 14 kilometres of underground cables.

The new cables connect four strategic electrical sites across the city centre between the City of London and locations across the Thames, including the South Bank.

A £7.5 million investment saw new circuits connect the locations through a series of tunnels.

The scheme strengthens the already 99.9% reliable network in central London by proactively replacing infrastructure before it comes to the end of its life.

The locations that are now linked together, will further bolster electricity supplies for the ever-increasing demand in the capital.

UK Power Networks Programme Manager, Joshua Alderdice, said, “Power supplies in London are 99.9% reliable, thanks to projects like this which modernise and maintain the equipment we all rely on.

“We understand how important energy resilience is in central London, and I’m proud to be part of a project where we improve this.”

Luke Hughes, head of asset management for UK Power Networks in London, said, “Energy resilience matters to our customers. This project shows how targeted investment can strengthen supplies while making smarter use of the infrastructure we already have.”
