Keuper Gas Storage Limited (KGSL) is launching a public consultation on what is set to be the UK’s largest hydrogen storage facility, located between Lach Dennis and Middlewich in Cheshire.

The Keuper Gas Storage Project (KGSP), classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, was previously granted a Development Consent Order (DCO) in March 2017. KGSL is now seeking a ‘Material Change’ to the consented DCO to store hydrogen rather than natural gas.

KGSP involves the construction and operation of up to 19 underground salt cavities at Holford Brinefield and the surrounding area north of Middlewich. Once solution mined, the cavities will have the capacity to store some 1300GWh of hydrogen.

The proposed changes will help underpin both the UK’s energy security and the transition to net zero emissions by 2050. If approved, the hydrogen storage facility will also link to HyNet North West, the regional hydrogen and carbon capture network. Hydrogen is a game-changing source of energy that can be used as both a raw material for industry and as a clean power source for transport, industry, business and electricity when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining.KGSL is launching public consultation on the proposed changes from 9 October 2025 to the 20 November 2025 to allow for hydrogen storage and the updated environmental information relating to the changes.

A representative at KGSL said, “KGSP is a key project in the delivery of the UK’s net zero emission targets and supports the North West’s ambitions to be the UK’s first net zero cluster by 2040. The latest public consultation provides the opportunity for statutory stakeholders and the local community to consider information about the proposed changes to allow for hydrogen storage as well as consider the Preliminary Environmental Information Reports.

KGSL welcomes feedback from stakeholders, the local community and the public over six-weeks from 9 October 2025 until 20 November 2025. For more information visit the project website.

KGSL are holding a public information event at the De Vere Cranage Estate, Byley Lane, Holmes Chapel, CW4 8EW on Wednesday 15 October between 3pm and 7pm. There is also an online Questions and Answer session taking place on Wednesday 22 October at 6.30pm. For more information, to register for the online session or to submit comments visit the project website.

If approved, KGSP includes a number of wider benefits including a community benefit fund where a total investment of over £400,000 across 10 years of construction will be available to support projects in the local area.
