GridBeyond: Smaller energy assets can unlock flexibility revenue

Businesses and public sector organisations could earn additional revenue from energy equipment they already own through aggregation, speakers told The Energyst’s latest webinar with GridBeyond.

“The Aggregation Advantage”, hosted by The Energyst editor Tim McManan-Smith on the 13th October, explored how batteries, CHP systems, EV charging, heat pumps and flexible electrical loads can participate in energy markets.

Shawn Duckett, GridBeyond’s head of demand response, challenged the assumption that participation requires investment in entirely new infrastructure. “The assets you likely already own can provide value back to the grid and unlock new revenue streams,” he said.

GridBeyond outlined how its virtual power plant platform coordinates assets across multiple sites, combining market forecasts with equipment controls and operational requirements. For heating and cooling systems, this includes working within agreed temperature limits.

“As we are equipment agnostic you don’t need to be ripping out an existing control system,” Duckett said. “We can integrate directly with what you already have.”

A lively Q&A examined fixed-price electricity contracts, metering, installation costs and the reliability of revenue forecasts. The speakers said participation can work alongside existing supply arrangements, while suitable markets depend on asset capability, location and control requirements.

Phil Best, GridBeyond’s director of public sector and funded assets, explained that its revenue share model links the company’s earnings to the value delivered.

“We don’t put an enhanced revenue number forward just to pick the project up,” he said.

The speakers acknowledged that market prices can change and emphasised the continued need for human oversight alongside AI forecasting and optimisation.
