Lambeth Council has announced that it will take responsibility for the existing EV charge point network in the borough as well as add new chargers.
The council currently has more than 400 EV charging points across the borough with a further 70 fast or rapid points and 264 lamppost charging points planned to be installed this year.
This week, the remaining the Lamp column EV charging infrastructure will change as the council transfers the operation to its in-house system.
Existing EV users who use an Ubitricity chargepoint in Lambeth will still be able to charge their vehicle – but will need to download and use the ClenergyEV smartphone app.
Deputy council leader Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, cabinet member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, said, “This is an exciting moment for Lambeth as we are implementing an innovative own and operate model, one of the first of its kind in the country.
“It gives the council control over how we grow the network without causing disruption to residents and businesses. It will allow us to install charge points in areas where they are most needed.
“It also means we can be fair and transparent on pricing and respond quickly to any issues, with revenues reinvested in improving the service.
“Since we published our Electric Vehicle Strategy in 2023, we have been clear that all vehicles on the road becoming electric is not the solution to the climate crisis.
“Mainly we need to reduce the overall vehicle journeys, but we want to support those who rely on their vehicle to travel sustainably with less pollution and convenient vehicle charging is part of this.”
