MAN Truck & Bus has begun offering its customers the Smart Charging Cube – a new, portable option for charging electric trucks and buses.

The cube, which is being provided in partnership with AW Automotive, can be operated at locations without the need for an underground grid connection, including vehicle depots, maintenance yards and construction sites.

It is essentially a battery with power electronics and a charging station, and, depending on local conditions, can be connected to the mains with a current of 32A to 630A.

The battery is available with storage capacities ranging from 500kWh to 1,100kWh, and between one and four charging points can be implemented per cube, with a maximum charging capacity of 400kW.

As a battery storage unit, it is also capable of supplying an external MCS charging station, enabling charging capacities of 1,000kW.

The cube, which can be purchased, leased or rented, is also capable of integrating self-generated electricity, for example from photovoltaic systems.

In addition, various charging functions are possible, including peak shaving, dynamic power consumption and bidirectional charging.

Last month, MAN began manufacturing electric trucks in series production at its site in Munich.

It also recently launched its Charge&Go charging service, available to all customers, regardless of brand.

The service makes it easier to find truck-compatible charging points throughout Europe with payment via a charging card.

Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO at MAN Truck & Bus said, “The entire MAN team is proud to be actively shaping the transformation from diesel to electric drive.

“Our highly efficient electric trucks will make locally emission-free freight transport a reality.”
