Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is adding new chargers at a wide variety of council-owned car parks across community and leisure centres, and public parking areas.
The first tranche of 22 chargers are due to be installed in the spring and summer of 2025, designed to cater for residents without driveways or access to at-home EV charging.
The charge points are being installed, operated and maintained by Believ, with funding support from the On-Street Residential ChargePoint Scheme (ORCS).
The first set will serve the long-stay and overnight charging needs of residents and visitors, and subsequent phases will see Believ install rapid charging to suit top-up charging and shorter driver dwell times.
Councillor Carrie Richardson, Cabinet Member for Climate and Culture, said the borough was making significant progress in developing EV infrastructure to support local people with making greener travel choices.
She added, “It is vital we deliver a reliable and accessible network for those who do not have access to private charging and to ensure no one is left behind in the transition to electric vehicles.
“That is why we are using government funding to serve the residential areas less likely to have attracted private industry funding.
“In partnering with Believ, we have access to all charging speeds and their depth of experience in understanding what technology is best suited to what location.”
