Samsung SDI has signed a multi-year agreement to supply batteries for next-generation Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles.
The high-performance batteries will include high-nickel, nickel, cobalt, and manganese (NCM) materials, delivering high energy density, extended driving range, long lifespan, as well as high power, along with Samsung SDI’s proprietary safety solutions.
Mercedes-Benz plans to use the batteries in future compact and mid-size electric SUVs and coupe models as part of its strategy to target the next-generation EV market.
In addition, the two companies plan to broaden their strategic cooperation in future mobility, including joint development of next-generation battery technology.
Samsung produces a range of tech products including smartphones, televisions and semiconductors, while Samsung SDI is its affiliate that makes batteries and materials mainly for other firms.
This agreement grows Samsung SDI’s presence in the European automotive sector, where it already has a supply relationship with BMW, Stellantis-linked brands via joint ventures, Volvo Group and Jaguar Land Rover.
The signing ceremony was held at Andaz Seoul Gangnam Hotel, attended by Samsung SDI President and CEO Joo Sun Choi and Executive Vice President and Head of Global Sales Han Jae Cho.
Also present were Mercedes‑Benz Group Chairman Ola Källenius, Chief Technology Officer Jörg Burzer, and Mercedes‑Benz Korea CEO Mathias Vaitl.
A statement from Samsung SDI said, “This partnership brings together the innovative DNA of both companies.
“It is meaningful in that Samsung SDI has secured a battery order aimed at strengthening its position in the global EV market.”
Mercedes-Benz said the agreement “ensures a stable supply of high-performance battery technology, a critical component of the brand’s electrification strategy.”
