SolShare 2 allows flats to benefit from advanced shared solar and battery integration

0

Allume Energy has launched SolShare 2, the next generation of its shared-solar technology that connects a single rooftop PV array directly to multiple flats.

Built in Australia and available to UK installers from August 2026, the upgraded device incorporates more capacity and streamlined battery integration, allowing for faster installs and commissioning.

A proven technology delivering results across the chain, SolShare cuts residents’ bills, lifts SAP and EPC ratings for landlords and developers and unlocks apartment work for installers and M&E contractors. It suits both retrofit and new-build schemes, opening up projects that weren’t viable when each flat needed its own inverter.

Serving up to 15 connections, SolShare 2’s capacity has risen from 20kW on SolShare 1 to 30kW, giving more headroom per system and delivering more SAP and EPC credits to allocate across each flat.

Allume’s first iteration, SolShare 1, has been in operation in the UK since 2021, with over 10,000 homes worldwide benefitting from the device, which has helped to cut electricity bills for residents by up to 40%.

Allume says its recent installation of an integrated solar and battery system on 24 flats in Cardiff delivered a 60-70% grid energy reduction, as featured in Great British Energy’s Local Power Plan.

Alongside the increased capacity, apartment blocks can benefit from simplifying integrated solar and battery systems. It is becoming increasingly difficult, or even impossible, to house batteries within individual apartments. To unlock these opportunities, SolShare 2’s solution lies in using a communal battery stored in a fire-safe location, such as a plant room or an external area. (edited)

The device’s commissioning and battery integration is designed to be straightforward, with the hardware pairing with the battery storage over a stable Ethernet connection. The system, which is PV and supplier-agnostic, also allows residents to discharge to the grid, with grid-charging to follow.

SolShare 2 allows for more sophisticated battery control, simpler installs and performance upgrades with compatible batteries.

Cameron Knox, CEO and Co-Founder of Allume Energy, said, “Coming from Australia, with one in three of our homes having rooftop solar, we’ve seen how powerful it can be when you combine solar with battery storage. Even with volatile global energy prices, power bills are set to fall in parts of Australia this year thanks to a record number of batteries being added to the grid.

“Until now, compliance and regulations have made it all but impossible to install these integrated solar-and-battery system in flats, but SolShare 2 changes that. The system responds to the feedback we’ve had from installers across the UK, which has seen our teams comprehensively redesign the hardware, making the systems even easier and faster to install.

“Combined with the government’s ambitious targets and funding into green energy, the update opens the doors to flats to benefit from solar and batteries.”

Commenting on the Allume installation at Odet Court, Cardiff, Joanna Davoile, Executive Director (Assets) at Wales & West Housing said, “The SolShare system seems to be a much fairer solution as the energy generated by the building can be shared equally to help our residents to keep their electricity costs down rather than going back to the grid.”

Case study – Scott Court, Dundee

Hillcrest and Allume Energy partnered to install shared solar arrays on multi-tenant properties using Allume’s SolShare technology. Scott Court in Dundee, utilised ECO4 funding to drastically reduce tenant energy bills and upgrade EPC ratings without disrupting residents or costing the housing association.

Commenting on the project, David Conway, Head of Asset Management at Hillcrest, said, “This project stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through innovation, perseverance, and partnership. At Hillcrest Homes, we are incredibly proud to have been part of a project that not only overcame significant planning and architectural challenges but also delivered life-changing benefits to our tenants.

“The installation has helped bring modern energy efficiency to a historic, listed building. Many of our tenants at Scott Court have already reported noticeable savings on their energy costs, with some saying they’re topping up their pre-payment meters far less frequently. This is a real and tangible step forward in our mission to tackle fuel poverty.

“We were especially impressed with the care taken by all partners and Allume Energy to ensure residents were fully supported throughout the process. From initial consultations to ongoing monitoring via the SolCentre app, the level of professionalism and communication has been outstanding.

“Scott Court is more than just a retrofit, it’s a blueprint for the future of socially responsible, sustainable housing. We wholeheartedly endorse this project and are already exploring ways to replicate its success across our wider housing stock.”
