Welsh authorities will have new tools to lower overheads and reduce carbon emissions after agreeing a new shared energy procurement strategy.
LASER Energy has worked with the Welsh Government to create the new ‘Welsh Basket’ procurement strategy, which has been designed to address the country’s own energy needs.
This includes procuring energy from Welsh renewable assets, collaborative purchasing to improve economies of scale, and offering traceable power purchase agreements (PPAs) to demonstrate progress on adopting renewable energy.
Eamon Grimes, Managing Director of LASER Energy, said, “The energy sector has changed dramatically in recent years, and there is greater need than ever before for local, traceable and renewable energy assets to support our nations’ needs. But an off-the-shelf solution does not work. That’s why we worked closely with the Welsh Government Procurement Delivery Branch on this bespoke approach.”
The Welsh Basket will allow Welsh public sector bodies to have their own dedicated strategy, and join together to maximise resources with aggregated buying power. It will also lower procurement costs, drive greater collaboration across the region and support in helping the Welsh public sector on its journey to Net Zero.
A spokesperson for the Welsh Government’s Procurement Delivery Branch said: “We engaged with the market to explore options that support the evolving needs of Welsh public sector organisations. The Welsh Basket offers a collaborative platform for organisations to share knowledge, drive value, and progress toward shared sustainability goals.”
The Welsh Basket will also offer authorities proactive energy management, data analysis and decarbonisation support, a knowledge sharing hub, and a dedicated Welsh Customer Service team.
Announced at the Wales Energy Forum in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, the Welsh Basket will commence working in 2026.
