Engineering consultancy, Egis in the UK, has been appointed to support the UK government’s Nuclear Team in assessing the social and environmental costs and benefits of new nuclear technologies.
The appointment to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Nuclear Energy Regulatory Justification Services Framework means Egis in the UK is an approved supplier to provide technical advice and expertise in support of the UK’s statutory nuclear justification process.
Egis’ appointment comes as the UK looks to maximise the benefits of new nuclear technologies ranging from gigawatt-scale reactors to small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced modular reactors (AMRs) and future fusion energy facilities.
In recent years, Egis has invested considerably in building a nuclear skills-base in the UK, having brought expertise developed over many decades in the French nuclear industry to the UK as part of its work on the new reactors at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. Egis has used this expertise to develop a team of UK nuclear engineers, able to serve the country’s nuclear sector.
Joanne Moran, Director for Water, Environment, Energy Transition and Nuclear at Egis UK & Ireland, said, “Rapidly increasing energy demands from the rise of data centres and electric vehicles, coupled with the urgent need to achieve net zero, mean the development and roll-out of novel technologies is critical to the UK’s economic performance over the coming years.
“Drawing upon decades of expertise developed in France, our appointment to the Defra panel will contribute to the UK’s ambition and roadmap to net zero, ensuring that innovation and growth in the nuclear sector continue to be underpinned by robust safety, sustainability and regulatory standards.”
