Electric Miles surpasses 11,000 flexibility dispatches across UK DSOs

Working with SP Energy Networks (SPEN), UK Power Networks (UKPN), National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), and Northern Powergrid, Electric Miles, a leading EV smart charging and flexibility technology provider, has now delivered more than 11,000 HH flexibility dispatches through its SmartFlex platform.

In the past month, Electric Miles successfully executed over 1,000 automated DSR events, supporting grid stability during peak winter demand across several regions. As flexibility markets expand across the country, SmartFlex is emerging as one of the most reliable and scalable platforms for turning EV charging into a meaningful source of flexible capacity.

Supporting the grid during winter demand surges

As winter demand increases, Electric Miles’ platform enabled fast and automated load reductions across domestic EV chargers, helping DSOs manage local constraints through customer-driven flexibility instead of expensive infrastructure reinforcement. These results demonstrate the ability of SmartFlex to provide rapid and predictable relief at critical moments for the grid.

George Fournarakis, Flexibility Senior Specialist at SP Energy Networks, added, “Flexibility is essential for operating a resilient and efficient distribution network, particularly during winter peaks. Electric Miles has demonstrated real leadership by enabling EV drivers to take part in these services at scale. Their ability to deliver more than 1,000 events in a month is impressive, and it is great to see the value created being shared with the customers who help make this possible.”

The expanding collaboration between technology platforms and DSOs reflects a broader transition toward decentralised, customer-led flexibility services.

Alex Howard, Head of flexibility markets at UK Power Networks, said, “I’m pleased to have welcomed Electric Miles into UK Power Networks’ day-ahead flexibility market this year. Electric vehicle charging provides a growing source of flexibility, providing real benefits to networks like ours and putting money back in consumer pockets. If we can make it easy for people to do the right thing for the grid, we can reduce the overall cost of the energy system.”

His remarks reflect the increasing recognition across DSOs that residential EV flexibility is moving from a niche capability to an important operational tool.

Doerte Schneemann, Flexibility and Markets Lead at National Grid, said, “The growth of residential EV flexibility is an important part of preparing the electricity system for a decarbonised future. Electric Miles’ approach, combining reliable automated response with strong customer engagement, shows how smart charging can support system needs at scale.”

This growing collaboration between DSOs and technology platforms reflects a broader shift in how the grid is managed during peak periods.

Duncan Oliphant, Head of commercial flexibility at Northern Powergrid, said, “Electric Miles’ ability to engage drivers, automate participation, and deliver consistent response to our signals contributes directly to a more resilient and efficient system. We value their commitment to returning flexibility revenues to customers, which helps build trust and encourages wider participation as we scale these services across our region.”

Rewarding EV Drivers Who Support the Grid

To recognise the drivers helping enable this level of flexibility, Electric Miles is launching a reward initiative that gives up to 50 EV drivers a £30 voucher, with more rewards planned as participation expands. The company aims to create a model where customers feel a direct financial benefit for supporting their local electricity network, especially during the winter season when household pressures are higher.

Arun Anand, CEO of Electric Miles, said, “Coordinating thousands of chargers across SPEN, UKPN, NGED, and Northern Powergrid requires precision, reliability, and real-time orchestration. The fact that we are returning value back to drivers shows that flexibility can deliver for both sides, strengthening the grid while putting money back into people’s pockets.”

Scaling Flexibility Across the UK

Electric Miles’ SmartFlex engine integrates real-time load management, day-ahead scheduling, and fully automated dispatch across mixed charger fleets. The platform has demonstrated consistent accuracy and responsiveness at scale, giving DSOs access to predictable flexibility without manual intervention.

With the rapid growth of EV uptake and increasing regional grid pressures, the company expects flexibility volumes to rise further in 2026 as more fleets, depot operators, CPO networks, and OEM partners join the SmartFlex ecosystem. Electric Miles is working collaboratively with DSOs to unlock new value streams, support regional grid needs, and advance the next generation of EV-led flexibility services across the United Kingdom.

“The low-cost rate is a real winner. Almost all of my charging is done at just £0.07 per kWh, giving me super cheap motoring.” — Electric Miles user.
